The Internet Business – Snake Oil Redux?

(The title is just a pitch – but we ‘ll get to it)

The equity, the bank account, the security of the an Internet based business is The List.

In any business that is always the case – its just more obvious in internet businesses.

Your customer base, your client base is always your market. Most ignore the fact and blast out advertising everywhere and hope.Or worse, wait behind the counter or desk for the victims/customers to come in.

There was a time (maybe still is) when stores relied on the vast public, and the one time sale.So they would bait and switch, extract the most from the customer while they had their hands on them, and forget the long term repeat business. They could (in times gone by) always rely on another customer/victim.

In reality that is no longer available, in Western Markets. The consumer is savy, has been beaten up too many times, and been treated too well too many times – not to know the difference.

And then there is the Internet – the customers tool, the corporations nightmare.

Back to the Internet Business…

The entrepreneur on the Internet is a Direct Seller – a glorified Shamwow salesperson.

And what is wrong with Direct Selling?

Especially on the Internet, where there is instant and large feedback available for customer and client. In fact Direct Selling on the Interent, IMHO, has the best possibility for true Win/Win for both parties.

If the direct seller wants to survive, he needs repeat customers and great word of mouth. So the customer has to win. And for the customer to be able to take advantage of the top direct selling businesses, he/she, the customer, cant bait and switch forever either (Take the trial and cancel right away) There is too much tracking for that customer to get away with things for long. First ebay, now everywhere A bad customer doesnt survive on The List for long. A tricky Seller cant keep a List. He can have a lot of one time hits. But not a true business. Not wealth.

So its The List. the targeted loyal email list that produces fortunes on the Internet. And the list is always a win win proposition for both buyer and seller.They can almost talk to each other through the sale process. Its as Frank Kern says the closest to sitting down one to one with the customer a seller can ever get. And yet he can ‘sit down’ with almost the whole world.

And the customer has a true opportunity to put input into the sale or product. And has every reason to refuse that which is not tailored to their requests.

A unique match up, where for so long direct sales has been snake oil stepped up a notch.

Its quite the concept when you think about it.

(of course names can be changed, emails proxied – but in the long run – what other market place provides such opportunity for the good deed to truly go unpunished?)
