Why are “they” such bad drivers

roadrage_wideweb__470x305,0Those ‘idiots’ who slow down on an empty road, infront of you, or swerve  infront of you and then slow down or…

And where does all that traffic come from. You crawl along waiting to get to the ‘accident’ scene, then for no apparent reason – everyone speeds up, traffic thins and its all flow again – no turn offs, no crash – what the…?

You,re on a main road, obviously a thru way street, and yet you are stopped every other block to let by red lights to either  a) One Pedestrian cross, b) one car from the Housing tract enter traffic or c) no apparent reason at all: -

doesn’t anyone get the concept of Traffic Flow…

Or a highway suddenly ends and dumps all its traffic into Downtown – again Traffic Flow anyone?

Well I like  this -

“After more than 30 years of reviewing government plans, including forest plans, park plans, watershed plans, wildlife plans, energy plans, urban plans and transportation plans, I’ve concluded that government planning almost always does more harm than good.

Most government plans are so full of fabrications and unsupportable assumptions that they aren’t worth the paper they are printed on, much less the millions of tax dollars spent to have them written. Federal, state and local governments should repeal planning laws and shut down planning offices.”

Randal O’Toole

Its those Urban Planners idiots – not the driver idiots, ok and the driver idiots, but if  ‘THEY’ the Urban Planners planned those traffic signals, orchestrated traffic flow, took some time to think things through…

Randall again

“Transit advocates will point out that the autos driving on congested
urban highways often have only one occupant. But that is exactly the point:

If modern life is so decentralized that carpooling makes no sense for most
commuters, how are giant buses and high-capacity trains going to work?

Planners often argue we shouldn’t try to relieve congestion by building
new highways because those new roads themselves will quickly become
congested.

Only a government planner would argue that we should not spend
user fees building things that people use and instead spend tax dollars building
things that people don’t use!”

Yea!

Ok I have a thing about traffic and badly designed city streets that seem specifically designed to produce congestion. And that urban planners have no concept of FLOW…flow…that is work out the key streets and make them have priority over entering traffic and pedestrian crossing etc

Badly sequenced traffic signals, A new Traffic signal for ever Mall (read Moneyed Developer) approach and new Housing development, so one car gets to stop fifty. And my other favorite, pedestrians who walk across roads without looking because well – its an intersection, its a white crossing man light  I have a right. Here’s a tip – human flesh always looses to fast moving sheet metal

But the main thing of course is there’s just so damn many of us. Population growth far exceeds any kind of urban planning we have ever thought of.We haven’t caught up, mentally. There’s not enough money. No mater how many elaborate studies of human auto flow are done (better to do a study than do SOMETHING- don’t lose votes for a study), there’s not enough money available. Plus The powers that be are always going to try and give a little to everyone so no-one in the end gets anything. Satisfy this developer, this lobby group, this Donator-

and the traffic well …

Those idiots are slowing me down

Yes and that’s not going to change -  the weight of car volume will increase, someone slows down for ten seconds to…whatever, and then another slows down for five seconds and soon you have a half an hour delay time , as the slow down multiplies through the sheer number of cars bumper to bumper.

The car is considered a personal freedom somehow. To fly a plane you need courses and training and hours of flight. To drive a car you need a couple of humdrum lessons and that’s it – for life! (or in some cases you need a buddy in DMV and a photocopier it seems)

The point being traffic congestion isnt going away anytime soon-so  the question is , as always how are we, you and I going to react to it.

BUT driving is my RIGHT dammit and if I wanna drive fast – that’s my right!

The thing I find about personal rights – you and I have all the freedoms in the world until our freedom to act affects or will affect  someone else – then we have a responsibility.

We are social beings.

The most frustrating thing in the world is other people. The most important thing in our world, is other people – we are other people of course.

Its a tough lesson to learn when we want to be so independent, I find.

But again I am free to act anyway I choose until that action can hurt another, then I am responsible.

(O plus I wanted to push this post – cos I like the pic. Sorry)
