Let me repeat one more time for the slower amongst us

Its whats called ‘a constant’.

Hard to accept?.Think of it this way -

Life = Change

Change = Life

If there is life  – there is change.If there is no change. There is no life.

What is here today will be different tomorrow.

Let us add another constant.

“We never learn the fact of change.”

“We never get it”

Do we?

This too shall pass. All is flux. Change is constant. Etc…

You know I think its because we’re lazy. I mean its not that we hate change – we do – its that we ignore the fact of its existence  – now that’s strange. Right?

Hey.Its all good. Nothing will change, and we control the world.So we dont have to do anything.

Or to be deep  – is it because if we admit to change them we admit to death? And the fact that although our bodies die, but that’s ‘me’ you say,that cant happen to me, it really has no affect on the overall.

No matter what we do and have done, and have accomplished, when we die…theres no hole. No gap in the world. No space, not one piece of energy is lost. We are redistributed, thats all. Like taking your hand out of water- where is the hole that your hand was in? Gone, like it as never there.

Cheery thoughts – but wait there’s more -

Ok – and why bring this up now?

Because we are going through some obvious changes and there is a wailing and gnashing of teeth that is a rising crescendo in the land as if it was so...unexpected.

In the book ” Free’ Chris Anderson talks about the encyclopedia business. How Britannica and World Book with $600 million dollars of income were put out of business by MS Encarta that generated $100 million dollars of business . Therefore Chris states – $500 million of value evaporated. And now Wikipedia – zero dollars of income. So FREE has vaporized $600 million of value.

Or to look at it another way.

Britannica and World Book for a time artificially created a business that made them $600 million a year, out of something that in reality has a zero dollar value.So basically – they juggled something out of nothing. For a while.

Just another way of looking at it.

Now GM is bankrupt – (tell me how did all those bright MBA types not get this change thing? – is this a new concept to Harvard business school?) and where did all those buyers go? Well we’re still here.Maybe its just that the largest corporation in the world (once upon a time) created something that only had a sort of value, for a while.

Its a trick?

Well all the consumer economy is just a trick. We dont ‘need’ cars to exist -but we decided we liked them then needed them, then couldnt live with out them. Then one day we’re going to find , just like the horse and buggy – we were crazy (as we pursue of course new craziness)

As Exxon will find out, as Microsoft is finding out (painfully, gradually) – everything changes.Always.Maybe Google knows ,because guess what? – one day (horror of horrors) there will be no Google.

As newspapers are seeing – But O my God they say this is not like the Horse and Buggy change – we’re talking about NEWS,(as if News was a new thing they own). we’re not talking about workers, we’re talking about journalists losing their jobs – this is different they wail. Journalists, last I heard, were people, like the buggy makers. And News is well… gossip – but in better type

And ( please don’t faint) The USA is soon, no longer going to be a powerful county. Never mind the most powerful, not even powerful. Why? Because that’s how it is.

Dont we look at the Roman Empire in the history books and say – “what they didnt see it coming? They didnt see what happedned to the Babylonians and the Greeks and The Egyptians – Empire rise and Empires Fall, that’s how it works…

(except for us of course, because well, we’re special)

Two givens: – Change is, and we ignore the fact of.

So you say “what do we do about it?”

Well unfortunately. Its not a question. Its not a problem to be solved – it just is.

But..but…

O of course another constant in Western Society (as long as there is one) – the guys at the top. They never lose. When GM goes bankrupt its the workers and the taxpayers who are allowed to suffer. When the banks fail, they get even bigger bonuses, but the small investors and the taxpayers – we get to pay. (This is apparently another constant – No Good Deed Goes Unpunished)

( The leveler is – eventually even they lose, one way or another – it just takes longer.)

“No really” you say ” What are we going to do about this?”
