The Rumor of the Death of News
The wail of large corporations losing money.A heart-breaking sound
And no-one loses money because the market or the platform they rely on changes. That is not possible in this controlled day and age. If you are losing money – its because there is a conspiracy afoot.
In this case – idiot amateurs on the Internet Blogs are bamboozling normally right minded people into leaving ‘accredited’ news sources and moving to frivolously unedited gossip mongering bloggers and twitterers.
If this continues – say the voices of doom- soon there will be no real news – all will be superstition gossip and rumour. The dark ages will close over us again. Civilizations will collapse. Your daughters are no longer safe. Heroin will be the food of choice…
A couple of things perhaps to contemplate.
The “true” News Giants say that the internet information is uneditied, unaccredited not fact checked and therefore mostly gossip.
As opposed to a large circulation newspaper like ‘ The news of the World or The Enquirer. Always accurate.Enquiring minds.
Or perhaps the Fox news service (no bias there) or those ‘Insider Breaking News’ programs on television. That whisk their viewers and watchers off into worlds of innuendo and rumor.
And has the New York Times ever been wrong? Does Rupert Murdoch have any biases. Does the Washington Post have any bias? How about the days of Chandlers La Times
All ‘news’ we receive is filtered one way or another.
However thats not to say there are not hundreds of professional journalists out there that gather and search the stories that we should know about. And do the best job they possible can.
And there is not a possibility in these democracies that the professional newsgatherer will ever disappear.
It not the ‘news’ the screams are about from Gannett and NewsCorp and Hearst and Murdoch. Its the money. Their revenues are falling. Not the sky.
And its not as if the revenues are going to the Blogosphere either. Its in limbo as the ‘money‘ searches for a place to land again. The ‘money‘ isnt going away , because the audience isnt shrinking. The audience that accepts information and news as its daily fare – is increasing.
The money will find a way.
Its not ‘ News’ that is disappearing its share value and compensation packages in certain C.E.O and Board Members wallets (and as we have seen, when capitalists lose money – they want socialism- laws and vengence)
Social Media is certainly enhancing ‘the News”. But it tends to be fleeting in its attention span. We like the big news – but social media doesnt do well on the follow-up
Twitter has certainly held up the Iranian Government crack down to scrutiny. And brought it to all journalists attention.
But now where are all the green avatars gone? Twitterverse has moved on. Though the Iraanian suffering has not. And The jornalists have not. There are still professional newspeople out there brining in information from Iran.
Twitter may have had the first pictures of The Plane on The Hudson. But it wasnt Twitter or Facebook or YouTube that followed up with the pilot and the FAA.
No-one expects Twitter or Facebook to do that.We expect professional Newsgathers to do that.
And we expect to pay for that service.
Its just that we, the news reader, has not yet decided how we would like to pay.We and the advertisers – “the money’ have not come to a place where we feel its win win. But we will. The money always gets its buyer.Eventually.
News is not going away. Its certainly going to be enhanced now. Its going to allow us not to be read to or dictated at – we can respond. And we can retaliate to ‘bad’ news stories.
The Death of news is an ugly rumor put about by the News world. Of course.
News is not dying. Its expanding. Its changing. Its becoming enhanced.
Different.
Interactive.
We, the news reader can now talk back.Thats all
News is about to become new. And Better. And we are all willing and able to pay for that. The question is how much and how.
